Certified Compostable Polymer With Bio-based Content
ecovio® is a finished product that can be used by the customer as drop-in solution with standard plastic production procedures. Additional blending is therefore not required.
ecovio® consists of the compostable and biodegradable BASF polymer ecoflex® and polylactic acid (PLA), which is derived from corn or other sugar generating plants like manioc. In contrast to simple starch-based bioplastics, ecovio® is more resistant to mechanical stress and moisture.
The main areas of use for ecovio® are plastic films used for e.g. organic waste bags, fruit and vegetable bags, carrier bags with dual-use (first for shopping, then for organic waste) or agricultural films. ecovio® can also be utilized in single-use applications such as plasticware. Furthermore, compostable packaging solutions such as paper-coating, shrink and cling films as well as injection molding and thermoformed products can be produced with ecovio®.
The benefits of ecovio® in agriculture are numerous: increase yield and earlier harvesting, little to none herbicide needed, less water usage, better resistance to fungal disease and easier, less time-consumer managing of end-of-life. Typical applications include:
ecovio® is well suited for the consumer market. Suitable for food contact, good barrier properties against liquids, fat and mineral oil, elastic and moisture and tear resistant it has a wide range of typical applications, including:
ecovio® can be produced on standard plastics manufacturing machines and can be used for a wide range of packaging applications. ecovio® runs on single and multi-layer films for rigid packaging, is suitable for food contact, and provides a great balance of stiffness and toughness. Typical applications include:
