What is Regulatory Compliance & Regulation?

Regulatory Compliance

Regulatory compliance is when an organization is aware of and follows (i.e., is compliant) all the laws and regulations applicable to its business operations. Regulations may be imposed at the local, state, federal, and international levels and can vary depending on the industry in which a company operates.

Regulatory compliance is different from corporate compliance, which is often more focused on adherence to internal policies and procedures to achieve company goals and objectives. Both types of compliance are essential, since they can drive an organization’s strategic direction, determine its ethical framework, and determine levels of accountability and transparency.

Regulation

A regulation is a rule or order issued by an executive authority or regulatory agency of a government that has the force of law.

An example of a regulation is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”). HIPAA is a federal law that regulated the protection of sensitive patient health information, including electronic protected health information (ePHI), and granted the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services authority to enforce compliance.

Nexeo Plastics has a dedicated team of professionals with extensive technical expertise who can help you navigate the changing regulatory landscape.
