Overcoming Hurdles in Scientific Material Selection
Unreliable information makes plastic material selection difficult. Due to the lack of useful performance information from data sheets and the inconsistent property values that are contained within the plastics materials, making the correct material selection for product development is both an important task and a dilemma of a plastics designer.
Material selection in the plastics industry has historically been performed by a variety of methods. In early years, recommendations from material suppliers played a large role since most of the practical knowledge regarding processing and performance came from these suppliers. They fulfilled all the support roles including sales, design assistance, education on optimal processing techniques and, where necessary, troubleshooting of manufacturing processes.
